Mission Statement
To promote, develop and support the aquaculture and aquaponics community in the state of Georgia.
To identify and apply best practices for innovative, healthy and sustainable food production systems. To identify, develop and promote appropriate and scalable technologies for application in the network community.
To serve members of the network by developing effective purchasing and marketing systems. Engage, collaborate and cooperate with other established networks and entities that embrace our shared values.
Provide information sharing forums, workshops and site visits to facilitate individual system development and foster network communications.

What is Aquaponics???
Aquaponics is a sustainable, recirculating farming process combining the culture of fish
(AQUACULTURE) and the growing of plants without soil (HYDROPONICS) in an integrated system.
Fish (tilapia or other) are grown in a controlled environment in tanks. Water from the fish tanks, which is high in ammonia from the fish waste, is cycled through filters into grow beds.
The filter (Bio Filter) houses several types of bacteria. The bacteria feed on the fish waste and break down the waste and ammonia content inthe water. Bacteria convert the fish waste in the water, first to nitrites and then into nitrates. Plants, at this point, absorb the nitrates into their
systems. This process is known as the Nitrogen Cycle.
Once the nitrates are absorbed by the plants, the water is returned to the
fish tank and the renewable cycle continues creating a sustainable ecosystem where all thrive. Fish produce waste, plants absorb the waste and produce fruits and vegetables, and we as humans consume the
produce.
